Starting A Chatbot Business – Mistakes To Avoid At All Costs

So today I would like to talk a little bit about starting a chatbot business and some of the mistakes that I encountered and how to avoid them.

Now starting a chatbot business is easy, and there are a lot of big players out there, but I would like to talk about the software that I trust my entire business to.

And why I know that chatammo is possibly one of the easiest sales out there. After years of being with the likes of Manychat, I could see quite a few problems with the business model that I was able to build with them.

Yes, I had started with my agency and at the time, there were very few restrictions on chatbot software. In fact, there were almost no restrictions imposed by Facebook. Which was both a good thing and a bad thing.

The internet is saturated. There are over 2 billion active websites and more than 1 million blog posts published each day. It’s no wonder that SEO companies are struggling to stay afloat in this environment, which is why many of them turn to affiliate marketing as a way to survive and thrive.

Affiliate marketing, however, isn’t the only option for agencies looking to grow their client base. In fact, chatammo might be an even better choice for some business owners since it offers a wider range of benefits that can help businesses prosper in 2021 and beyond. After years of being with the likes of Manychat, I could see quite a few problems with this business model that I was able to build with them.

When you’re running an agency, it’s tough enough just managing all your current projects without also having to worry about finding new ones on top of that.

So today I would like to talk about how chatammo has been working hard at providing agencies with plenty of leads and opportunities for growth while not taking any of their resources away from what they’ve already got on the table.

Mistakes In A Chatbot Agency

Yes, I had started with my agency and at the time, there were very few restrictions on chatbot software. In fact, there were almost no restrictions imposed by Facebook. Which was both a good thing and a bad thing.

What happened because of the lack of restrictions, chatbots became very much like the wild west, they were easy to build and very easy to make your clients a profit with chatbots, which meant a lot of people were jumping onto the chatbot bandwagon, and well abusing the system.

The chatbot market was the wild west. It’s easy to build and even easier to make your clients a profit, which means there were many agencies jumping onto the bandwagon without any knowledge of what they’re doing.

The result? A lot of people abusing the system for their own benefit. And that just doesn’t cut it.

Well, it did for me. I had been building chatbots for many years before Facebook decided to go full throttle on regulation and sanctions against non-compliant chatbots, privacy settings being exploited.

Which to be honest in the long run was one of the best things that could have happened to the messenger marketing industry.

At the time this didn’t bother me too much as I was picking up clients rapidly and getting paid very well from them. I was also extending the services I offered to clients, by way of upsells for each service and able to provide a lot of value on the way.

However, a few problems started to creep up, problem number one was the way that manychat had their system set up. So I would build a chatbot for a client, and then charge a fee for running the chatbot on their page. I would be not only paid by the client as the retainer but I would also be paid by chatammo as an affiliate. (lol, they paid a tiny commission).

Now, this was all well and good until one of my clients wrote to manychat, and told them that they wanted full control back on their page, they still wanted to keep manychat, and they still wanted to keep running all of my flows, but had decided that they didn’t want to pay me anymore. And manychat said yes, they gave the client full access locked me out of the management, and let them keep the custom bot that I had built.

They had committed what I still believe is a huge no-no and given away one of my own chatbots that I had worked long and hard on, and then continued to do the same thing to some of my other clients and other agencies owners.

This client was within a small industry that I had a lot of other clients in there too, and word spread like wildfire. This owner had learned some basic chatbot skills and was offering everybody else, a very discounted rate, so in effect even though manychat has listed me as one of their experts (a listing that is still there), they have almost single-handedly ruined my business. And let them keep the custom bot that I had built.

Many times I would be staying up late if we had a large promotion going on so that I could interact as the page and keep those customers coming. I was almost fanatical about my clients and wanted the very best for them, after all to this day I still believe that the very best way to get out of life what I want is to help enough people get what they want.

The problem was I was burning myself out very quickly, between keeping the clients I had happy and what was quickly turning into an influx of new clients. then it was rapidly turning into far too much work.

I was at this time still using manychat as my chatbot supplier, and each of my clients had their own manychat account, with me being added as an admin. so my manychat dashboard was more than a little full. 

Then I had each of them with a Clickfunnels account, and a WordPress account, I would be building the sales funnels opt-in pages, etc, and I would farm out the blog writing, etc. I would also have Shopify which I farmed out, and Buffer which I would take care of.

All of the passwords log-in accounts, calendars, and everything else were dotted about everywhere, and so I also had to use Zapier to try and get some kind of organization.

It began to look like I was never going to break away from actually working in my agency, and that’s when I started to look for alternatives, and how a full agency could run a whole lot simpler.

I wanted an all-in-one solution, and I wanted to upset the industry. 

I’ll admit my first few incarnations of Chatammo were far from perfect but at the time, I was only using it myself and using a tree builder, was a bit of a nightmare, but it was mine, so continued with it. and things quickly began to improve.

Firstly we found the fastest servers, yes they are a little more expensive but the downtime on them is a record low, so we knew no matter what sort of traffic we got to our software we could handle it.

Next, we wanted an auto-post feature for Facebook, so that all setups could be completed, and posted without us having to pay for Buffer, then we thought well if we have Facebook, why not add more, so continued with Instagram, Reddit, Twitter, Medium. So we could set up posts for a few weeks in advance and not have to worry about them getting posted.

I didn’t want to be a slave to the algorithm and so, to appease the algorithm of both Facebook and Instagram, we made auto comments, which meant that once somebody commented on our post, then Chatammo, would head over and reply to that comment. Having the same comment repeating would have been bad for the algorithm so we gave different comment replies, each time pre-set. 

However when automating your comments sometimes you could find abuse being added to your post, by some trouble maker, so we added a bad language filter, which can also write the poster a little message reminding them that it wouldn’t be stood for.

Our clients loved it, they thought we were working harder than ever because we could offer services that nobody else could even touch. But that brought up another problem, you see their rivals were seeing the quick growth within our client’s company and had heard a little about engagement, and were writing to people who had commented on the posts.

So to combat this we also made a hidden post after answer feature. which still served the algorithm well, and still helped Facebook and Instagram show our posts to more people.

Then we wanted to be able to add our comments on a Facebook or Instagram ad, so that feature was added too, bringing the cost of advertising down because our engagement was going up.

We wanted to be able to add everybody who had commented on our post straight into our chatbot, so this feature was also added quickly, and engagement went through the roof, suddenly we could run interactive campaigns of tagging who deserves this and that, and get huge engagement, and have our lists building faster than ever.

At the time I owned two tattoo studios, one which was very busy and another where I was brought in to help it get back on its feet, I ran a competition, of a free day of tattooing, worth around £400, and said it could only be won by somebody who was nominated.

Engagement went crazy, which was a great bit we needed a way to collect all of the entrant’s emails, SMS, and almost as important designs so we also build a user input for all of these including, sending video and images.

So far so good, but like I said we really wanted to rock the marketing world and so next we looked at email integration, now on other messenger platforms this could be a bit of a nightmare having to use Zapier integration, and so we also bypassed that, and added seven of the best email autoresponders straight into our chatbot, meaning no more paying Zapier for that.

But we also needed SMS platform integration, and so because we cover worldwide we wanted the best deal for everybody so they could pick the cheapest provider based on where they were, so four platforms were also added.

And we decided that we wouldn’t top-load or limit the amount you could send. What you see on their sites is what you get.

Now of course if we were going to make all of that worldwide then we also had to make sure you could collect money worldwide, and so eleven different payment processors were imported natively, right within the platform. Meaning we had a truly worldwide system that could be used in every country with every currency.

Now because we had so much going on with the payment processors, we knew that we had to build something special for e-commerce. 

When you look at other chatbot software then, you normally see something like a little slider, that you can choose around ten products from, you click by and are taken off to god knows where then a whole performance on getting the delivery sorted out.

We went a totally different root, firstly we added all of our payment integrations into our stores, that could also be accessed independently, in fact, we got so carried away with how advanced we could make it, we actually use food delivery as our demo, where the restaurant can accept payment, even by cash, accept the order, send it out for delivery and complete the order, all right in their dashboard, not only that. By using a QR code each table inside of the restaurant can also order food and get it delivered to their table automatically.

Of course, that is an extreme example, it will do normally e-commerce too. The point is there is no friction of people having to leave your chatbot, which of course equals more sales.

Added to that, they are also now on your list ready for remarketing, and we can even include discount codes.

That’s not to mention digital products, which can be uploaded by you and delivered straight from the chatbot when your customer pays.

Our Basic Chatbot Package

Pricing was our next concern, you see we didn’t want you building a business and us getting rich from it, it’s your hard work that makes us successful, and a geordie bloke driving about in a Ferrari with tattoos and a bald head, wouldn’t suit me. so we fixed our pricing for unlimited and on our lowest membership still give you three pages, two for your business and one for if you are wanting to market our product or whatever else you would want to use it for.

 And you still get all of the features. for $27 per month.

Our Agency Package 

Now we know as an agency then you are going to need a lot more pages and we do just that, with unlimited pages and unlimited subscribers ready for YOU to have all of your clients under your umbrella.

The shocking price for all of that is $47 per month

The Agency Ecommerce 

As above unlimited pages, however, rather than getting only one payee from our platforms we give you an additional 20 eCommerce complete all with a different payee.

For $97 per month

I believed that these prices are more than comparable considering what you gain when having chatammo, but still, I wanted to be able to offer more.

So that when you hit the ground as either an affiliate or as an agency, then you could basically offer more of a service, with not only no cost to you but also a massive advantage to any clients you were serving, that’s when I came across Groove, 

But because I have rambled on for so long, let’s make that’s its own post.

Suffice to say, we are determined, to make out the software the very best and something that can’t be compared.
